I've been feeling kind of burned out by Yaoi Con the past few years and really waffled about going for the last two, but since I lived in the Bay Area at the time it seemed silly not to go. Now that I'm back in L.A., I figured the ride--fun while it lasted--was finally over. Nothing could get me to go, except maybe an appearance by Miyano Mamoru (I'd cross multiple oceans and land masses to see him in concert, but such a thing at Y-Con will never happen) or Inariya Fusanosuke (because I live and die by Maiden Rose, I'm so seriously).

See y'all in SF in October.

I haven't watched any anime for the past season or possibly two seasons, so I didn't think I wanted to go to AX this year. But it's approximately 583 degrees fahrenheit in the North Valley. So I went, and this is what I learned: )

I have a folder on one of my external drives called "fanart - !UNIDENTIFIED." The exclamation mark is there to keep that folder at the top of the list, so it will mock me immediately whenever I open the drive. Well, after 4 years I've grown pretty sick and tired of all that mockery, so I decided today was the day to identify and properly file those 1200 images.

1199 images later, all that's stopping me from achieving my dream are the two people in this picture: )

ETA: Solved, thanks to [personal profile] kalloway! Tifa and Cloud from FFVII.

Today I thought I would deal with some of the challenges of life here by revisiting some badfic favorites. To my chagrin, my yahoo mail account was wiped due to inactivity on my part, so I lost all the treasures I've saved there through the years (the "good" as well as the "bad"). Then Windsor suggested I try GWA for some of the Gundam Wing stuff--and it is down.

I know some of you, like me, have an inordinate fondness for badfic. If you've saved any over the years, would you mind sending them my way? jenn dot abiding at gmail dot com. I'm open to anything but am particularly hoping for GW stories and Lotrips (the Danish flag and deaf goth girlfriend would be especially appreciated!).

Thank you in advance, from the bottom of my heart.

So like. Some of you know how I have a thing for anime characters who are amputees, right? Well, the steam cleaners came this morning (I'm back in southern California now, btw, which is fantastic except that the house was a disaster zone when I arrived, so I've had to hire professionals after completely giving up). When I shook the hand of the lead guy, Carl, the stump of where his pinky finger had been grazed my palm.

*shiver*

I guess we can consider this a full-blown fetish now.

Which of course has nothing to do with the fact that I'm calling the company and asking them to come out again next week to do the living room. That's an actual necessity, since everything I owned is currently piled up in there and the carpet and drapery will definitely need to be steamed clean.

Definitely.

Well, my friends, it has finally happened:
  1. Kevin Bacon was in Apollo 13 with Tom Hanks.
  2. Tom Hanks is the father of Colin Hanks.
  3. Colin Hanks is in The Good Guys with Bradley Whitford.
  4. Bradley Whitford has a cousin named David.
  5. David got his BA from a small, liberal arts college in New England, where he roomed with a guy named John.
  6. John is the father of Muskrit.

I've been doing little bits of overtime all week, half an hour here, fifteen minutes there. Today it was 45 minutes.

Then I got home and saw it was 6:00 instead of the anticipated 7:00.

Which means that, in fact, I walked out fifteen minutes early.

Feeling defeated at the moment. Searching for a roommate is, for me, an utterly loathsome task. There are people who don't find it a big deal and I wish I were one of them, but I'm not. FOAF fell through and the one friend who was considering it has decided to move to Chicago instead.

One answer would be simply to get my own place, but I'm not sure it's worth the expense and hassle of moving now if I'm only going to do it again in six or eight months, which is what I'd like. I'll go crazy trying to spend another six months with the current roommate, though, so something has to happen. I'm just feeling helpless because every plan I come up with these days is failing.

Moving on. I've been downloading a ton of shows from the new anime season but have yet to watch anything. Amazingly, I did actually read the final chapter of Ouran High School Host Club (amazing because I usually delay reading/watching conclusions of series I don't want to end -- I still haven't watched the director's cut of Return of the King, for example, and I probably won't until The Hobbit is out, depending on how I decide to feel about The Hobbit).

Anyhow, Ouran... )

My sister has given birth to a second son, whom she and her husband have named Jackson. The firstborn is named Samuel.

Am I the only one who sees this? My sister and brother-in-law have named their children collectively:

Samuel Jackson

If only they had a daughter named Elle.

As often happens during times of personal change, I am experiencing an overwhelming desire to chuck everything I possibly can and start over fresh and anew. This is the driving force behind Visionquest: Muskrit in China. (Ah ha ha--no, please, let's not call it that! I don't have a name for it yet, but I probably should find one.) I am alternately thrilled and terrified at the prospect of spending a year teaching in China. I think most of the fear is associated with the teaching component, although I talked about it when I saw my dad a few weeks ago and he (a retired 5th grade teacher and one time consultant for the CT Department of Education's teacher assessment program) said he thought my straightforward style would be well-suited to teaching in China. I guess I'll find out when I get there.

Sort of related: remember when I said it was fine that Miyano Mamoru (who is currently touring in Japan but See Muskrit! See Muskrit be an adult! I'm not going because I am saving for China) got killed off in Highschool of the Dead, as I wouldn't have to watch it anymore? Well, I kept watching it. I think I'm obsessed with it. I came to the episode where something happened, but I wouldn't be so rude as to say what in front of the cut! No spoilers if you're current with the anime through episode 10. )
Seriously, this might be my favorite show of the current season. I'm still trying to work out my feelings about Kuroshitsuji II. It's really well done, it's just making me feel uncomfortable. I mean, I know I claim to love fail!caretakers, but...well, that will be a post for another day.

Having said that, one last thing! )
the cat in the fruity hat
I'm about to do something stupid.

I don't know what it is yet; I can just feel it's coming.

This is going to seem like a digression but I promise to bring it full circle. Even though I said I wasn't going to watch Highschool of the Dead, I can't seem to stop. Zombies push my horror buttons more than anything else. They instill in me a genuine sense of dread and terror. And by the way, that 2008 remake of Day of the Dead can go fuck itself. All the mockery of slow zombies and declarations that the only way to make zombies scary is to make them fast only makes me think the people saying such things are already dead inside. Zombies aren't scary because of their speed. Or rather, it's their very slowness that adds to the terror. They don't have to be fast to get you. They're going to get you no matter what; they're just going to keep coming, slow and mindless, and they're going to get you, you're going to lose yourself to them.

Lately I've been thinking about zombies more than anyone should, I guess. I've started to feel my soul rotting. If I stay here, I will die; I will be dead on the inside, even though I will keep moving around.

So, not for the first time, I'm going to do something that will look stupid to most people and that I almost certainly will berate myself for down the road. But I guess I'd rather be a stupid muskrit than a zombie.

What I'm going to do is hold on as long as I can, save as much money as possible, and then at the last second, right before I change, I'm going to do my next stupid thing. I'm pretty sure it will involve volunteering at an elephant orphanage for a month or two, then possibly teaching English in China for a while. Because counting how many pieces of fecal matter I walk by every day is just not the way to prove to myself that I'm still alive.

Is summer usually a dismal season for anime, like the Hollywood equivalent of releasing a movie in February or August? Or is it just me? I had marked eight shows to check out this season; so far half of them have had subbed first episodes released--and already I've dropped three. The only one I'm keeping is Kuroshitsuji II, which I'll save to talk about until I can do a post of recs for the season. Here's what didn't stick for me:

Seitokai Yakuindomo -- No interest in the characters or the story; felt the characters would irritate me too much over time.

Sekirei ~Pure Engagement~ -- Whoops! This one is a sequel and I already rejected the original when it aired.

Highschool of the Dead -- I know, it's pretty surprising that a show promising so much gore would interest me, but it's the only anime of the new season, as far as I know, that features Miyano Mamoru's sweet voice. So I watched the first episode and I consider what I'm about to say a spoiler, so click the courtesy cut at your discretion. )

Still to come:

Digimon Xros Wars, which I'm not sure I'll even watch but since it's Digimon, I'm compelled to collect it.

Legend of the Legendary Heroes, which is another one I'm not sure about but the title alone makes me want to give it a try.

Nurarihyon no Mago, which I was on the fence about because demons/monsters/supernatural is not really my cup of tea, but it looks like there might be a caretaker archetype/dynamic I won't want to miss. Also, Fukuyama Jun.

Occult Academy, which I realize seems to involve the things I just said I'm not into, but this one has time-travel. And I also like this promo picture, which probably has nothing to do with anything but nevertheless is enough to make me give it a try. ETA: Just watched episode 1 on Crunchyroll and am upgrading this one to the "watching" list.

Happy birthday, America.

Also, the ending of the anime I just finished watching has left me in a funk. Anyone care to rec an anime, preferably not sports because I unfailingly root for the "wrong" team, which leaves me destined for disappointment, and if someone would be so kind as to explain how a person who possesses neither magic/superpowers nor mechanical aid of any kind can accelerate suddenly to a new level of speed and power in mid-air, I would be much obliged. I don't mind if it's an older title, as long as it's available somewhere.

When a fandom catches my attention, I can never tell whether it's going to be a passing fancy or something that blossoms into obsession. If it does go the obsession route, I don't know how to determine if the flame is going to burn out quickly or if it will last a while. So this might well be fleeting but, having fallen through a worm hole and come out the other side in 2006 (my brand "new" laptop is a refurbished Toshiba from that year), I seem to be enraptured with Eyeshield 21. It started because there is not enough Miyano Mamoru to satisfy in the current season, so I've been trying to get my hands on everything he's done that I've missed.

Anyhow, I've been scouring the internets for Eyeshield 21 fic, as you do. Usually I skip headers when I'm reading; the main exception is when I'm new and want to avoid spoilers. So I skimmed the headers on this one fic and here's what I saw:

"Spoilers: for when Character A does This Thing Later in the Series"

--in which Character A was spelled out, along with the thing he does later in the series.

Wha-? Whyyyyy?

On the other hand, maybe this is like that time the girl at AX told me a certain character dies at the end of his anime. I was so enraged I couldn't watch the anime for a while. Finally I watched it--and he didn't die. Then I watched the movie and kind of wished everyone had died, but oh well.

This is about the four hundred and seventy-second time I've gotten an eyeful of spoiler while attempting to find fanworks. Obviously I'm doing it wrong--but how do I do it rite?
the cat in the fruity hat
So. I feel like, perhaps, writing a little something. Would anyone like to make a request? I'm thinking the classic format of character or pairing + word or phrase is the way to go. Here's what I think I could get into; please know that order does not indicate any sort of top/bottom, seme/uke, dom/sub preference.

Muskrit to Microsoft: "This aggression will not stand."

Skritworld - February 5, 2010 - In a move insiders call "long overdue," Muskrit has declared war on so-called advancements in Microsoft's Windows O/S.

The Muskrit-Microsoft relationship, founded in 1985 when Muskrit opted to teach herself MS-DOS on one of the four IBM machines in her high school's computer lab rather than wait the requisite 90 minutes to get on an Apple, has never been easy. The height of stability was achieved mid-way through the first decade of the 21st century, when Muskrit went against conventional wisdom and stopped all updates--security or otherwise--for the XP O/S.

In late January, Muskrit's beloved laptop began acting erratically and finally ceased functioning. Two days ago, a new laptop--pre-installed with Windows 7--arrived. At approximately 6:45pm Pacific Standard Time on February 3, 2010, Muskrit turned on the laptop for the first time.

That's when the trouble began.

Heated shouts were heard an hour after start time. Witnesses report hearing, "I am the f---ing Administrator, you dumb f---ing piece of crap!" and "If Administrators can't have blank f---ing passwords, you shouldn't have f---ing let me set up my account that way!" Some time later, the single word "Unpin!" was repeated several times, followed by, "Unpin, goddamn you!" This is believed to be a reference to the Internet Explorer icon on the taskbar, according to sources close to Muskrit.

"F---!" then punctured the air half a dozen times, followed by a period of silence. A fly on the wall, who asked not to be identified for this article, claims to have seen Muskrit prone and weeping on the floor during this time.

The next day, Muskrit ordered a used copy of XP installation software and was seen googling "reformat hard drive windows."

A measure of calm has been achieved in Skritworld for the time being, but experts are already questioning what will happen when the time comes that Muskrit's preferred applications are no longer supported by her O/S.

Muskrit declined comment for this article, but at least one insider says a copy of Linux for Dummies is en route.

On Saturday, Neko and I watched Season 1 of True Blood. I had seen it last year when I was visiting my folks for Thanksgiving (my stepmom loves it), but it's always interesting to have a rewatch when you know what's coming.

Then on Sunday I started watching Season 2. I have two episodes to go (at 2:20 in the morning, I decided not to push through). I am on the verge of being sucked into the fandom, because with everything that's going on--and there is a hell of a lot!--all I can think about is being considerate and cutting for spoilers and/or lack of interest on the part of those who don't watch it. )

So I just managed to get myself a ticket to the original cast performance of "The Nightman Cometh" on the San Francisco stop of their national tour. Yes, I paid twice the face value of the ticket, and yes I expect it to be worth every single freaking penny. I haven't been this shaky-excited about going to something since the Lotrips days. Verily, I love It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia that much. My fangirl skills are too rusty for me to be able to meet them, I think--but seeing them on that stage will be enough.

Imagine that Darth Vader's breathing apparatus broke.

Now imagine that he works across the aisle from you at the office.

Welcome to Muskrit's world.

In other news, my little special needs hamu Casey passed away on Friday. I am still sad. I probably will be sad for a while.
